Ectropion & Entropion

A turned out lower eyelid no longer in apposition to the eye is called an ectropion. The lower
eyelid is usually affected and tearing and infections result. Correction is surgical and involves
tightening of the eyelid by placing it firmly against the ocular surface.

An eyelid which turns inward is called an entropion. Not only do the eyelid lashes abrade the eye
but also the eyelid skin abrades the eye. An entropion is uncomfortable and often the eye is
irritated and scarring and infections may result. Surgical correction is strongly recommended.
